Murapara Zamindar House:
Ramratan Banerjee built the Murapara Zamindar House by the bank of river Rupshi in 1890. They were three brothers . Ramratan, Vijaychandra and Ashutosh. It was forbidden for the common people to cross the houses of these tyrant zamindars with their shoes on and under the cover of an umbrella.
Ramratan was a very trusted employee of a British indigo planter. The daughter of the indigo planter died of malaria. He left the country out of sheer grief. He asked Ramratan before leaving the country, ?What do you want?? Ramratan Banerjee knew all the secrets of the indigo planter. He asked for a trunk, the trunk that contained lots of money and ornaments. It was with that money and ornaments that he built up that vast zamindari and his mansion. There was a large scenic pond at front, with a set of stairs made of stone descending into it. There were vast fields on all sides of the mansion.
An influential person of the area bought the entire zamindari by three deeds from the children of Ramratan's youngest brother, Ashutosh Banerjee. The price of each deed was Taka 60,000. After the partition the then East Pakistan government set up a juvenile correction centre in the zamindar's house. The government in 1972 set up a refugee camp there for the non-Bengalis. In the last part of 1972 the local people occupied it and established a college, which is known as Murapara Degree College. The building has been renovated, and as a result it has lost all the marks of heritage. Two statues of lions were at the main gate of the Zamindar House. Even they were stolen during the war of liberation.
